0 miles from Knickerbocker Lake
The Lake House is perfect for a family or group of friends to enjoy a relaxed vacation that gives you fabulous scenic views over the lake and yet only minutes away from town. Fully renovated it has a well stocked kitchen, all bed linens, bath & hand towels, paper goods, dishwasher and Gas for BBQ supplied to enjoy dining alfresco with our outdoor beer garden. It is a slice of heaven, hope you come and enjoy our home. Knickerbocker Lake, in Maine's Mid-Coast Region, is a picture of north country serenity. Less than five miles from well-known Boothbay Harbor, Knickerbocker's tranquil waters below the busy seaports just a few miles away. Swimming is popular at Knickerbocker Lake, along with nature hikes and kayaking alone the shoreline. Maine Inland Fisheries and Wildlife regularly stocks trout in the lake. Children will especially love searching the shallows for minnows, turtles and the occasional frog. The wooded setting encourages deer, wild turkeys, rabbits and moose. Bald eagles are often seen soaring above the treetops and a wide variety of song birds and waterfowl visit the lake on a regular basis, especially the loons. The fall view over the lake is spectacular with it's various colors, Reds, Yellows and Orange in amongst the green pine trees. The area is well-supplied with trails and paths for walking, hiking, sailing and cruising to the Outer Islands and all the wildlife that Maine has to offer. Only one mile from Knickerbocker Lake, the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens provides some of the most beautiful grounds for the visitor's enjoyment. Miles of trails lead the visitor to experience ornamental gardens, waterfalls, exceptional natural beauty, incomparable stonework and sculptures, waterfront and woodlands. A full schedule of educational events, art exhibits and culinary delights featuring world-famous chefs and herbs and produce grown in the Kitchen Gardens means something is always going on to pique the visitor's interest. Heading south from Knickerbocker Lake, Boothbay Harbor provides all of the charm of a historical working fishing harbor. Many of the villages here have historically survived by fishing, although commercial fishing has declined, lobster is still king. The lobster boats set out every morning as they have for generations, bringing back a bountiful harvest of the delectable crustaceans for dining delicacies world-wide. Nowhere on earth are the lobster more plentiful or more fresh than Boothbay Harbor, which abounds with specialty dining establishments in historic surroundings, with Maine coastal views and plenty of reasonably-priced lobster - the town's chief crop. As commercial fishing has declined, Boothbay Harbor has become a world-choice destination of seacoast fans. Full-service marinas cater to privately-owned yachts and pleasure boats. The rugged Maine coast is a favored location for photographers and artists, many of whom manage galleries in the harbor area. Here, it's possible to find gallery tours so the visitor will never bypass the best local finds. Boats can be rented at the local marinas - kayaking or paddle boards are a favorite. There are spots for fishing along the rocky shoreline where visitors may try to hook a striped bass. Or, charter fishing can be arranged ahead of time. Sightseeing cruises are available by schooner or excursion boat. Up to seven lighthouses can be seen in the Boothbay region - Captain Fish has a wide variety of great trips from shoreline, lighthouses, whale & puffin tours. In summer, one can take the ferry to Squirrel Island, a summer-only colony where cars are forbidden and most of the cottages date from the late 1800s. The Lake House on Knickerbocker Lake is known for it's serenity, evening sunsets, calling of the loons at dusk and yet close enough to enjoy the many restaurants and local stores filled with home made delicious goodies and great restaurants for every price point. Come and enjoy a little slice of Heaven. See you soon, Karen

Vacation Rentals. Privately Owned. Professionally Managed. Trusted since 1993. Cottage Connection was one of the first vacation rental companies in the Mid-coast region of Maine. Jeff and Audrey Miller, who own three vacation rental homes themselves had an aha moment when they realized they could not find anyone who ‘got it’ to manage their rentals for them. Since 1993 they have been trusted by homeowners and vacationers to “connect” each family with the perfect cottage for their vacation. As Audrey puts it; “The home they stay in becomes a personality, a part of their lore, when a family connects with the right cottage. Whether they want a rustic cabin in the woods or a high-end ocean bungalow, the right setting sets the tone for the entire vacation.” Learn more about how Cottage Connection can help make your vacation perfect! ___________________________________ BOOTHBAY REGION The Boothbay Peninsula is a beautiful region rich in culture, history, all things nautical and of course it’s own unique niche in nature. Make this quaint dog-friendly cottage in Boothbay your home away from home for your next coastal Maine vacation. This house is the former residence of sea captain, John Kent, who built it in 1832 and was also the site of the Sawyer Island Art Studio where artist Joseph Bailey Ellis whose sculptures are still on exhibit at Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh. This deep history is treasured and so the house purposefully retains some of its original vintage touches of antiques, glassware, and authentic ambiance while adding many modern conveniences for your enjoyment. Curl up with a good book after a day of activities, or head out across the Grand Lawn to the Boathouse where you can sit and relax to the rise and fall of tides. This is also a great place to grab a beverage and get ready to be wowed by the stunning sunset views across the wide expanses of the water that surround the property on all three sides. For an even closer experience, the adjacent private dock awaits you and your kayaks for a paddle and exploration of nature’s family including the fun-loving seals, seabirds, and other feathered, finned and furred sun-seekers. The 2.5-acre property has well-maintained lawns and shade trees for peaceful walks or for frisbee and ball games as there is lots of room to spread out. Additionally, you will notice a portion of the property that is now dedicated to periled pollinators that are sadly on a national decline. There you can stroll along the mowed pathways to discover Maine native wildflowers where butterflies abound (seasonally). We are proud to be members of the national programs, Monarch Watch and Firefly Watch, and support their connection to organic and sustainable practices and citizen science. Nature guides pamphlets for hiking in the area and for these programs and others are available in the house.   Step back in time on this secluded piece of land, water, and sky. Take a nap in the bottom of a canoe as the gentle water rocks you. Watch the sun slip into the Atlantic from the boathouse –you can almost hear it sizzle. Spin on the hand-hewn wooden tree swing like you did when you were a kid, and explore the mud flats at low tide. Maybe you will even find some clams! With three-and-a-half acres of land (most along the rocky coast), there is so much to see, do and experience on this unique and magical property. THE HOUSE: While many modern conveniences have been added, the cozy, homey atmosphere of this cottage remain much the same as when it was built in 1832. Nestled beneath indigenous trees, the warm and inviting ambiance reflects the waterfront area, and the large, well-kept lawns are great places for both playing and relaxing. The First Floor includes the kitchen, butler pantry, dining room and family room, as well as a ¾ Bathroom with a soaking tub, and one bedroom with one Double Bed. Period pieces and antiques abound in every room. The Second Floor has one bedroom with Two Twin Beds as well as a King Bed, one bedroom with two Twin Beds, and the fourth bedroom has One Queen Bed. A ¾ bathroom with shower completes the second floor of this Sawyer's Island gem. NOTE: This house was built in the 1830's when staircases were steep and narrow and there was no such thing as indoor plumbing. Fortunately, the outhouse was replaced with indoor plumbing, but the staircase is original. Please let us know if mobility is an issue for anyone in your party so we can make sure we connect you with the right cottage for your perfect Maine vacation. BEDROOMS: (1) Double, (1) King with (2) Twins, (1) Queen, (2) Twins. At Captain Kent's, guests will experience camp the way summer folk in this area have been for generations. The large, expansive yard dips right down to a tidal inlet (the property is on a spit of land with salt water on three sides). Nicely protected, the inlet provides a bounty of wildlife. You can kayak, sail, swim, bird watch, canoe, fish or simply float all in this idyllic and secluded setting. The mudflats warm up during low tide, making swimming warmer than usual when the tide comes back in. At the water’s edge, you will find the boathouse, a two-story building with barn-style doors facing out to the dock and float. The boathouse is like having another living room! Though quite rustic, this space is an absolute favorite of all ages as THE place to hang out. Equipped with outdoor furniture, it has served the family as an extended patio, family room, alfresco style dining, lanai, nap room, kids play area and just about anything else you could think of. You can close the barn doors in inclement weather or watch the storm come in over the river. From the boathouse you can see and boat over to Indiantown Island; Marilee Ellis, one of Captain Kent’s descendants found an Indian Chief skeleton in the pigeon mounds, which remains on display at the Harvard University Museum of Natural History. Boat on over and participate in your own scavenger hunt! The private dock and float at Captain Kent's are the perfect spot to launch boats, enjoy cocktails, watch the moon rise or simply let the lazy days slip by. The Boothbay Peninsula is a beautiful region rich in culture, history, all things nautical and of course its own unique niche in nature. The area offers ample opportunities for biking, kayaking, canoeing, fishing, charters and guided cruises, spas, golf, mini-golf, bowling, museums, antiquing, hiking and walking trails. We have the Maine State Aquarium, the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens and the Boothbay Region Land Trust with its 30+ miles of pet-friendly trails in protected areas.  Sawyers’ Island is approximately 175 acres and is connected to Hodgdon’s Island and to the Boothbay mainland by bridges. It floats comfortably in the Sheepscot River enjoying views of Barter’s Island, Porter Island and Indiantown Island. Stunning views, quiet, protected inlets and peaceful island attitudes are the signature finds of Sawyer’s Island. Though equipped with cell and satellite service, many visitors and inhabitants alike enjoy the slower pace and the ‘step-back-in-time’ feel that washes over you as you cross the hand-crank bridge. Ferry service to the Isle of Springs is available from the town landing. A canoe or kayak can get you to Indiantown Island and the Boothbay Region Land Trust preserve there. The land trust has scavenger hunts that are fun for all ages. Be sure to stop by the Trevett Country Store for some of the best lobster rolls in the Mid-coast on your way to explore Porter Island. And of course, no trip to this side of Boothbay would be complete without exploring the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens on Barter’s Island.
